Do you throw full power punches while shadow boxing?

I do sometimes, or sometimes i put hand weights in me hands aswell, but its down to preference, the lighter weights dont commonly pratice this,|||No. If you do that your pretty much guranteed to hyperextend your elbow. Thats not the point of shadow boxing. Shadow boxing really is to perfect your form when throwing punches, snapping the punches with good form and bringing them back, keeping your non-throwing hand by your chin, staying on balance while throwing, keeping your chin tucked, %26amp; eyes up (you should be in front of a mirror) .|||yes|||Depends who%26#039;s shadow it is.|||personally i dont. I only do short sharp jabs.

Even if doing a hook i still do short sharp movements. You still get the same exercise from it. Plus if you go %26quot;full court%26quot; as it were and use all your power you could be in danger of causing damage.

HTH|||no why would u thats what the bag is for shadow boxing is to c the way u move and the try to correct it|||save it for the real thing|||I throw with power but I only extend my elbow about 95%. Don%26#039;t risk injury by hyperextending.

The real work in shadow boxing is in snapping the hands back.|||No you shouldn%26#039;t throw punches at full force. You do run the risk of hyperextension. The key to throwing to punch during shadow boxing is to #1 perfect your form #2 pull back your punch as fast as you had thrown it. Keeping correct a stance of even weight distribution (50/50 on each foot) relaxed shoulders + knees slightly bent, are all key points to throwing a good hard hitting punch.|||no|||Just use short crisp movements on all your punches. No need pulling a shoulder socket over extending your arm during practice.

Do you just sit things at the bottom of Shadow boxes?

Or is there a way to mount them in the center?|||Although I%26#039;ve made many of my own shadow boxes, I have also purchased a couple, and they came with Velcro to attach items inside. This is also what I use in my custom built ones, if it%26#039;s something I don%26#039;t want to damage by permanently mounting.

If you%26#039;re planning on mounting paper items you don%26#039;t want damaged look in the scrapbooking section of your craft center for archival mounts for a variety of ephemera applications.

Either way, you can attach items to both the bottom and back of your piece!

I hope this helps!|||I don%26#039;t know why they are called shadow boxes, but I have seen items mounted on the back-glued, maybe. You can also sit things on the bottom|||no u dont.. cause its shadow..?

Is kata similar to shadow boxing?

i thought katas are stylised self defence against imaginary attackers, then why is tkd katas are so lame useless in a real fight and the practioners of some katas looks like a stand-up comedian clowns when they demonstrate it(add the heeeyah!huuuuu!screaming in there)?|||Shadow boxing is done for cardio purposes (i.e. punching, moving, watching form for holes in the defense and such, getting used to the moving around that it takes in the ring). the only simularity is that they both can be done for some sort of conditioning. (Shadow boxing isn%26#039;t used exclusively, it gives you more cardio for a fight, helps you remain fluid in your motion and getting you used to the constant movement needed, but it doesn%26#039;t allow you to block punches better, or deliver strikes better, or take on multiple opponents, it is just for cardio and footwork purposes).

Kata is done for a variety of reasons, very few of them are done in the same way of Shadowboxing. Most people who think so either do not understand kata, or don%26#039;t understand Shadow boxing.

Some of the reasons for Kata:

One:it is a repeatable, teachable way to maintain and keep the techniques of an art.

Two: it conditions your body for the art, gets you used to sometimes awkward feeling moves, helps you build the muscle and body control to perform these moves, and to develop yourself that doing them feels natural. To help you get comfortable with the performing the techniques.

Three: Generally along with preserving the art itself, it contains techniques of art, including hidden ones or ones that may not necessarily be readibly noticed. More importantly it contains important fundamentals for some arts, stances, ways of moving, transitions between techniques that while under no stress can be tweaked to do properly, without having the stress of sparring associated with it. (In Kata if someone is dropping a hand or moving wrong they aren%26#039;t getting tagged). But there is important details in the kata, that can completely change a technique by understanding it totally.

Four: It teaches self discipline.

There are other things, personally I understand them and their uses, and think for somethings it is definately very good. I think they should be the basis of a teaching, but not the concentration of an entirety of a class. Meaning you go in, work on Kata, maybe some one step kata, etc. and that is all you do.

I think Kata is a great way to introduce techniques, then sparring/randori and a variety of other tools should be used to fully understand how and when to use a technique, and how to tweak it.

For example, Kata in Judo is used all the time, though not necessarily the multistepped way that there is in the system of Judo%26#039;s kata. But generally we show the kata version of a throw, so that a person can understand and feel every bit of the fundamentals. Then we tweak that version to show how you would do it in competetion, we have our students randori (free sparring) and let them make that technique their own. Later on for belt testing they have to do the kata version again. (usually performance in randori or competetion denotes when someone is ready to be advanced in rank.

So do techniques in any art that come from the kata, there may be some way to tweak it or change it to make it more applicable, but the fundamentals of the technique are within the kata, it needs to refined and tweaked for an individual so that they know how to do it for them.

So I think Kata can be a good tool when used properly with everything else. I think to make Kata the sole basis of your teaching is to deprive you students of how to learn how to effectively use the techniques contained within a Kata.

At least that is my take on it...|||Improperly used kata is lame and useless in a fight. Most schools that teach TKD unfortunately do not even understand the applications of the kata they teach. Kata is mock fighting and should not be %26quot;stylized%26quot;. The applications need to be understood and broken down for the students to understand. The individual moves and combinations need to be detailed and practiced with different opponents often. Kata is merely a way of practicing and learning the moves in detail. Kata is only one part of several tools to teach with and to learn. It is an important part none the less.

I would never endeavor to teach without using Kata. I%26#039;m not above altering some of the repetition in some of the really long Kata that repeat every move to the four winds. It is important to understand the application as soon as the student is ready.

Edit:

Judomofo has more patience with your question than me. He has broken it down better than I have heard on here ever.

Thanks to him for being patient and thorough!|||Judomofo has it down pretty well. Kata%26#039;s alone will not teach you to fight. You can learn to fight without Kata%26#039;s. But you will will have many more limitations to deal with odd situations.

Kata%26#039;s (or forms in Kung Fu) help put the moves and techniques into your muscle memory, where you do not have to think about the technique itsself, or what comes next. You can not fully understand this without sparring/fighting. Starting with drills taken from the forms, you learn what it is that you are actually doing, then when sparring, you learn when to use that technique.

It takes three main things to become a good fighter:

Techniques (forms or Kata%26#039;s)(no opponent)

Applications (Drills)(cooperative opponent)

Experience (Sparring)(resisting opponent)

Fighting TMA%26#039;s and MMA both use these same fundamental basis%26#039; to create a good, well rounded fighter.

Some TMA%26#039;s eliminate the last one, therefore they will not be as prepared as they think,.

Some MMA schools try to eliminate the first one, which limits their abilities in the other 2.

For example, A boxer will learn a short combo, say Jab Jab Hook. They will learn this as shadow boxing to get the combo in their muscle memory. Then they will use a willing helpfull opponent (or coach) to drill the combo against a moving person. Then they will practice it with a resisting opponent in a set environment. This is repeated over and over and over, giving the boxer a strong set of moves that have been learned so that the actual thought process during a fight is on the fight itself rather than the techniques.

This works with all Martial Arts, and is the way that they should be trained if you want to learn to use it to protect yourself.|||Lol, No. Kata is to Martial Arts what Shadow Boxing is to %26quot;Fighters%26quot;.

Katas incorporate defense moves. Knowing the defense move improves your form in Katas. Katas improve your defense moves. The idea of course is to train your muscles memories to react instinctivly when needed.

Lol, Yes, some forms of Power Breathing are %26quot;unsettling%26quot; at times however it serves it%26#039;s purposes as well in the art.|||Kata is like shadow boxing. It%26#039;s just the tkd katas rely more on principles than actual techniques that would work. (stopping a punch with a kick, blocking then counter etc.) Don%26#039;t forget that tkd is antiquated. Our opponents no longer wear armor, which is why a lot of the strikes in punches in both tkd, karate, kung fu sometimes seem to leave you so vulnerable.|||Katas are much like shadow boxing. You are practicing your techniques without a live opponent. Much like boxing you should also apply the same techniques with live partners. his is very valuable in the learning process.

I think Bushidomofo hit it on the head.|||That%26#039;s basically what it is... Choreographed shadowboxing. By doing Kata repetitively over a period of time, your techniques become ingrained in your muscle memory. The idea is, that when you re attacked, you ll automatically select the right move to defend yourself, without even thinking about it. Some people enjoy Kata and some don%26#039;t. Hardcore, traditional martial artists enjoy kata because it links them to martial arts traditions that go back for hundreds of years. If you%26#039;re not into tradition, then join an MMA gym. There%26#039;s something out there for everybody.

While shadow boxing, has anybody ever been knocked out by their shadow,.or has it ever went to the judges?

For some reason my shadow sucks and I always beat the hell out of it! Are you sure you want that pillow fight?|||Nope dont do shadow boxing it%26#039;s a no win situation|||Nope xx

I am looking to buy a 'shadow box' with a scotish thistle or purple heather. It can also be cermaic (3D affect

preferbly small - oval ,round or square.|||Have you considered making your own? This way you get exactly what you want, have something to be proud of and proud to pass on for generations, and it can also be lots of fun making it yourself.|||i agree. make your own.|||try some antique stores... online and it%26#039;s always fun going to look round the proper shops too...

good luck

How do I make a shadow Box, for my prize "BRAN Muffins?"?

you need several empty boxes of branflakes, some tape and a piece of saran....

for complete instructions, send 4 boxtops from branflakes to PO box 41833 POST 90123

;0|||you need 4 pieces of wood of the same size, about a 8-12 inches wide. nail them together to form a square. then insert bran muffins.|||uhhhhmmm get a shoebox and put them in it,.

I plan to join a boxing gym when i turn around the age of 18. Is that too late for me?

Although I am joining at 18, I have already practiced the basics of the jab, the straight right, the left hook, my stance, footwork, shadow boxing, and defense for at least half a year with an instructor who I am related to, but have not recently been visiting. I have also gotten some sparring sessions in. I%26#039;m not trying to become a professional fighter but at least a solid fighter. Is joining at 18 still a good time?|||It%26#039;s definitely not too late for your goal, since you don%26#039;t plan on going pro. You%26#039;ll be way ahead of other beginners in view of your practice. But why wait? You can join at 16 with parental consent. If that%26#039;s the problem, then just do everything you can to stay in shape, and keep practicing what you have already developed. Good luck to you!|||To have fun it%26#039;s not to late, to go pro it%26#039;s too late. It takes years to develop a skill. If your planning on going on for 5 years of practice minimum then go for it. Report Abuse
|||Not at all. I once met a boxer at 32 and he was fighting his first pro fight with no amatuer experience at all. As a matter fact you could turn pro without any amatuer matches. It all depends on if you are ready. Make sure yo get yourself a good manager do not do it for more than 10 years.|||never to late to join

Have you ever accidentally punched a hole in the wall while you were shadow boxing?

no, but I%26#039;ve broken my air guitar before.|||I wasn%26#039;t shadow boxing but my shadow was messing with my head. It made me look a little fat so I punched her.|||no but i can think of some other ppl who probably have.

I have to make a shadow box about me for my psych class?

I have to do a Shadow box, using a shoe box for my psych class. It has to be about me, but I want to see an example of one first. cause I%26#039;ve never done a shadow box before.

here%26#039;s some things I%26#039;m interested in:

Singing

Music

Swimming

Ice Skating

Reading

Playing with my nieces and nephews

Any ideas on what I could do?|||What I did for mine was i wrapped the box with paper and put pictures on the outside of this I was interested in doing some day when i get older. On the inside I put things that I am currently doing and things that make me who I am.

For example:

I put a dog collar in it because I love dogs more than anything in the world! I put a bracelet in it that a little girl made me because I like to help children. I put a gold metal I had won. I even put a eyeliner in it because I always wear a lot of eyeliner.

Just put things that make you unique from everyone else and put thing in it that make you who you are. Be creative.

This should be a fun project because you are letting everyone see who you really are, and not what other people judge you as being.|||Paint the back of the shadow box with a background and bottom that suits you. Get some photos (ones you have or find online) Print them with either photo paper or if you print them on normal paper (paste or tape) them to cardboard. Cut them out nicely and create a scene in the painted box so the pics stand up (glue or tape behind so it doesn%26#039;t show) You can also use some small toys you have lying around for the scene.

A second Idea is to use the pics as the bottom/background and use small toys in a scene to show what you are interested in. Also with it bing psych class use colours/patterns that describe how you %26quot;feel%26quot;

I'm a 15 year old trainide ex-thai boxer. I'm not good with boxing. But i have boxing techniques, shadow boxing

My boxing fight is in 3 - 4 months time.I%26#039;m aiming to knockout my opponent. How do i train for my power, speed and solid punches?

pls help.

thank you!|||What you ask for you should already have! Aiming to Knock some one out is your first mistake, you%26#039;ll probably be winded by the 2nd or 3rd round and be knocked out yourself. remember you won%26#039;t be able to kick so work on your stamina and defense.|||THis may or may not help but do you have a trainer? Most states have an organization called golden gloves and is free for ages8-34 unless you compete then i think its around $35 but not monthly i think thats a one time fee

good luck|||Very good because once I got knocked out by my shadow !|||Well, you are completely on the wrong track.

At fifteen years old, the last objective you should have is to knock someone out. You will be the one getting decked with that kind of attitude.

Find a quality gym somewhere with a decent coach. That is your first step. You will know you have found it when the gym talks about skills, hard work and safety instead of being tough and knocking people out.

Boxing is a sport.

Sport boxing has coaches, and boxers have bouts.

Professional boxing has trainers, and fighters have fights.

The semantics may appear close, but amateur boxing is not prizefighting. The priority of the referee is to protect the boxers, and to enforce the rules in the ring. Headgear must be worn.

You win on points by landing more correct scoring blows on the opponent%26#039;s target area. Knock-downs do not result in extra points. Knock-outs are accidental, and not an objective.

You only get one brain, and the kind of noodle damage you get from unprotected head shots does not heal. Ali is living testament.

So, get on track with the right people before you get hurt.

Now, as far as power, speed, and solid punches.

Get that good coach.

He will show you how to throw a proper punch.

Start with a good jab. It goes out from a defensive posture that protects your chin, out very fast, and back even faster, like you have hit something hot. It comes back right to that defensive position.

Then footwork. Lots of skipping, running, and practice dunking under a rope to learn head movement and slipping punches.

Heavy bag will build power. Straight wrists, and hit, don%26#039;t push. Step forward like you are falling into a hole. Fall into your power punch.

Then, combinations. Simple ones....double jab, triple jab. Jab hook. Double jab, hook. One-two.

Then, right cross. Throw it like a baseball, but then right back to that defensive posture. Don%26#039;t get caught.

If you spar with someone bigger and stronger, counter punch some. Keep on the move, away from his right (counterclockwise) and when you see him throw a big one, make him pay with a countering jab or combination. But keep your head moving, and keep that jab working.

Good luck!

What is the best training method to win at Shadow boxing?

Stand where Cherry%26#039;s BIG A$s will block the light and have at it son!|||You definitely won%26#039;t win if standing next to Jeremy%26#039;s shiny bald head......the shine will blind you.|||Aim low.

Fight dirty.

Can anyone tell me how to shadow box during training?

I was wondering about how many punches should be thrown. How long should each session go. Should I throw combinations or just jabs? Any information at all would be helpful. I am starting to take classes soon and I dont want to go in totally clueless.|||I started boxing this year with 2 great trainers. Just find a clear area with enough room for you to move around (preferably infront of a mirror) and imagine yourself in the ring boxing with your opponent (remember he throws punches to so block and move around every now and then). now you should do this to warm up and do 3-minute rounds. i myself just do about three 3-minute rounds. throw jabs and straights and hooks and uppercuts. the use of the mirror is to correct your form and see if you%26#039;re throwing your punches correctly. but continue to imagine yourself in the ring with someone.

good luck and keep your hands up.|||get in ur stance and do ur 1-2 combo facing a full length mirror.. the length of a round shud b long enough and do this i%26#039;d say 3 times.

Sandbag shadow boxing?

I am interested in mike tyson and i read that he used to shadow box in front of a mirror and avoid a swinging sandbag can anybody give me instructions on how to set up the sandbag.|||Fynnol ~

It%26#039;s called a Mazie Ball. It%26#039;s a speed bag filled with sand that hangs from the ceiling by a rope. The bag should hang to where it is dead even with your face. Stand in your stance in front of the bag push the bag straight away from you as the bag is coming back at you let off a series of punches, try for four straight punches. At the very last second move your head to the left or right, let the ball pass as the ball is behind you using a pendulum motion (side to side) bending at your waste go side to side four times, on the fourth time stay on that side until the ball passes you. Do not look behind you. If you don%26#039;t move your head the ball will let you know, it doesn%26#039;t hurt, it%26#039;s filled with sand not concrete. When the Bag is coming back at you throw punches again. If the ball, slows down, push it away and make it go faster. It%26#039;s all about timing. After a few days, you%26#039;ll look just like a young Tyson.

Good luck Fynnol and thanks for the question.|||Thanks for the info, never knew what it was called, but I saw a tape of Mike working out with one.

Does anyone know how to make a shadow box enclosed with plexiglass?

the box is 24%26quot; by 14%26quot; 1 inch deep needed with delicate feathers so needs to be protected from dust.|||sure . cut you ply wood . for the base 24ins x 14in

then cut some sides made from a nice birch ply wood

cut all the corners at a 45 degree angle and nail them together...... dont forget to glue them

as for the plexiglass. go to lowes and ask them to cut it to size . ....

use 100% silcone to keep the dust out

you maybe could stain it before you put it all together

Can anyone tell me where I can find handcrafted arrowhead shaped display frames or shadow boxes?

The frame appears to be cut (in an arrowhead pattern) from plywood, is stained and has criss cross etch marks along the edge of the frame. I saw one of these frames at an artifact show but, no one can tell me where to find them or who makes them.|||While I have not seen what you are talking about there has to be someone in the city of Kansas City Missouri or outlying areas that might be able to help you.

During the football season, arrowhead decorations are ever present.

With all the talk, the Pakistani politicians have somewhat conveyed to the world that they will take action if India gives %26quot;proof%26quot;. Indian politicians have never faced Western media to counter them and say %26quot;look we had bad experiences with giving Pakistan proofs in the past.%26quot;

Also, now the element of surprise is gone since Pakistan have troops along its border which it gladly moved from its Western border (they were getting tired of killing their own brothers in FATA, Waziristan).

The Indian Administration also lacked the foresight of effectively putting systems in place. In case of a war with Pakistan we would win for sure - but at what prise. Already with worsening economic scenario, Indian involvement in a war would be disastrous. Also Pakistan is no Palestine - there would be human cost as well.

Crucial hardwares are out of place - INS Viraat is down for the next 5 months due to repair works, The ballistic missile defense system India hoped that it could put in place by 2009 only conducted its first test a couple of months back, an important part of the nuclear triad i.e. the nuclear submarine is not ready in Indian hands. MRCA contract negotiations are going two years behind. Surely, India has to realize that it is living beside a semi-failed state and has to take defense seriously. It has to realize that being friend with US is a great thing, but not at the cost of overlooking national priorities. It has to fight its own war. Also the war should be on multi fronts like economics, political, etc. India should destabilize Pakistan as Pakistan is trying to do with us.

Look at Indian media, it is only cooking up (breaking news) and fueling the war of words when it should focus on the above core issues and put pressure on government.|||coming to the point

It seems, that you have no idea what%26#039;s happening in this world

read carefully

India do not have to fight the war

we just have to tighten the security

this is the time of global recession, economies are cracking and falling down

which ever country sustains this financial crisis, will emerge as a greater power in future.

War at this stage means

1. at least 50% growth in unemployment

2. Count less $ loss

3. If it leads to a nuclear war -loss of Count less Lives.

Now comes the point that then how long will we keep tolerating this bull ****.

If Pakistan hadn%26#039;t been trapped in its own net ( in other world if America hadn%26#039;t double crossed Pakistan ), we would have taken the risk to teach him a lesson once and for all.

But the condition in Pakistan now is so miserable ,that people over there praying for their lives

What actually happened

When America launched the ireq war , they made a plan to overcome the loss of the war.

they decided to let osama run without being killed, from iraque to Afghanistan ,and Afghanistan to Pakistan

even they had all information on him , they let him run.

motive was to keep chasing him and leaving US military bases behind, and a favorable government which does only that what America says.

reason for this heavy deployment of forces was to establish a pipeline from middle east to Iraque ,Afghanistan and through Pakistan, for supply of oil , to exploit the natural resources of these countries and compensate the loss of the war .

even they got an excuse to fight the war on the name of terrorism.

Now after eraque and afgan ,America is eying on Pakistani.

in the mean time America turned the political table of Pakistan by supporting Musarraf in pak, America used Pakistani army to fight against Islamic fundamentalists ( Taliban), which has changed the image of the terrorist groups who work on redial Islam ,and established by Pakistan itself to trouble India.

They are now supporting talibaan against Pakistan itself,

result

every day blasts in pak.

by the time Pakistan realized that it was mistake to support US, its too late now.

America is on the door of Pakistan

within 6 months there is big war in Pakistan which is going to divide Pakistan in three small countries..

This war has already snatched Wajirastaan from Pakistan.

its the place in Pakistan where Pakistani army killing their own people on the name of talibaan, US soldiers are killing Pakistanis on the name of taaliban.

talibanis killing Pakistani people for supporting US.

in Wajirustaan , people of Pakistan are being killed by three different group with no hope of support from any side.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xhy6BR8Hb...

result, they declared their separate state and up against Pakistan now.

there is a mass killing going on in Pakistan.

there is terror in the eyes of Pakistanis

That is in the situation of global recession, prices have gone out of reach of the common people .

cant even afford bus fair ,forget about meals for both time.

i had seen the videos of Pakistani common people crying , for their existence further

no hope in their eyes

do you wanna see that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lXRfSlEA...

Its the time to concentrate on economy not the war.

we will fighter some other day

we just have to strengthen our security to stop such attacks.

Thats it

Pakistan gonna burn in fire , because god has decided to punish Pakistan for taking lives of innocent people.

Can anyone tell me wher to find handcrafted arrowhed shaped frames or shadow boxes?

The frame appears to be cut (in an arrowhead pattern) from plywood, is stained, and has criss cross etching along the edge of the frame. I saw one of these frames at an artifact show but no one can tell me where to find them or who made them.|||I could construct them for you if interested. Some of my work can be seen at wegnerwoodworkings.com. Contact info is available at the web site. Would need a more detailed description with dimensions to get started if interested of course.

How can I punch faster without boxing equipment?

I dont have a punching bag. Only 8 pound weights and shadow boxing skills.|||Just punch air, or %26quot;jab.%26quot; Do 100 punches, 50 with each hand, until your arms don%26#039;t hurt, but not particularly trying to punch straight. After that do 100 as fast and as straight as you can. After that is a breeze for you find something with weight to it, 5lbs or less, and do the 100 punches again (I recommend starting with 2 lbs), and still as fast as your arm can go. It doesn%26#039;t need to be a %26quot;weight%26quot; so to speak, but any object with weight to it (book, paperweight, shoe, etc.). If you don%26#039;t have 2 of the objects than do one hand at a time, 50 punches each. After 2lbs becomes a breeze raise it to 5, then 7, etc. Never go up more than 2 or 3 lbs as your joints need to adjust to the weight. This is called resistance training, believe me, after you do your first 100 punches holding 5 lbs in each hand, when you put down those weights your arms feel as light as pencils, and you won%26#039;t believe how quick you can move them. The best resistance training, however, is done underwater. Get into a pool or lake neck-deep and do the 100 hundred punches as fast as you can. You will feel immediate results. The great thing about water is that the stronger and faster you punch the more resistance it gives you, so you can probably train for speed with the water method alone an see awesome results. Have Fun.|||Focus on the FORCE behind your punch, and NOT necessarily the speed!|||find something that makes you have to react faster . If there isn%26#039;t any store near by, get any two objects with consecutive weight.

Hold the items/dumbbells in both hands.

Throw punches as hard and fast as you can.

Throw an even amount of punches with your items/dumbbells.

You can also go to a swimming pool or anything about that size and punch continuously underwater.

Consider doing push-ups, these will build the strength on your arms.

Shrugs can also help. A shrug is when you hold two heavy objects in both of your hands and keep your hands hanging whilst lifting your shoulders up - NOT your arms. That is different from lifting weights.

Where to buy a glass front wall hanging shadow box for wedding goblets?

We were given some nice engraved goblets and cake servers as wedding gifts last year. I would like to put them in a glass front shadow box but can%26#039;t find one to fit anywhere! I%26#039;ve tried the usual stores like Michael%26#039;s, JoAnnes, Target, etc. I even tried searching online. The box would need to be 13 inches tall by about 15 inches wide and 2 3/4 or 3 inches deep. I would like it to have a glass front. How to dry roses & display them in a shadow box?

I%26#039;m in the process of drying my bridal bouquet. It was all roses, and right now they%26#039;ve been hanging in the closet for about a week. I think in another week they%26#039;ll be good to go.

I%26#039;d like to display them in a shadowbox, but I%26#039;ve never done this before. I%26#039;ve seen lots of photos, but how do I get them to be stable in the box?

Does anyone have a step by step how to guide?

Thanks!!|||so now just spray them with hairspray and put them out to show...|||Drying Your Roses

There are three ways to dry roses

1. Air drying

2. Desiccant- Drying

Air Drying is the most common method of preserving roses.

This method is best for rose buds that are just about to open. Hang them in a warm, dry and dark place with good ventilation for a two weeks. Tie a string around the stems and hang them upside down. This will prevent moisture from becoming trapped between the flowers which can mold them.

Once they are completely dried be careful to handle them with care for they will now be brittle.

Display them tightly in a terracotta pot for the wonderful display.

For more complete information on air drying flowers see %26quot;Working with Dried Flowers%26quot; In the floral instruction section of this site.

Desiccant drying

This method is perfect for open roses.

You will need an airtight container that measures 1 inch taller than the roses you are drying and silica gel crystals (enough to completely cover your roses -standing on end) If you would prefer to save on silica gel crystals you can cut the stems shorter.

Put 1/2 inch of Silica Gel in an airtight container -place the roses so that the blooms face up.

Cover them very carefully with more silica gel crystals until every part of the flower is covered. Now seal the container tightly. Keep them at room temperature for 10 days before removing the lid of the container. After 10 days carefully remove them from the desiccant.

For more complete information on drying flowers with desiccants see %26quot;Working with Dried Flowers%26quot; In the floral instruction section of this site.

Shadow Boxing with dumbells?

Hi, i have 5 pound dumbells and was wondering if i should shadow box with them to gain some muscle mass and speed|||You would benefit just as much if shadowboxing without the weights.|||i wouldn%26#039;t.shadow sparring serves more than one purpose.and one of them is working on your technique and foot work.using the weights wont help that.theres better ways of increasing your speed and strength.just my opinion though.|||I wouldn%26#039;t do that... boxing with dumbells causes jerkiness...And jerkiness w/ weights is how you tear/injure muscles beyond repair.

You can put small dense weights in the bottom of your gloves...

Or just do more reps with the weights...|||Use very light weight, you could hurt yourself.|||NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER

shadow bow with weights....or kick with ankle weights...it will just screw you up ALOT in the long run and you%26#039;ll be sorry you ever tried it|||no, although when you take off the weights it feels like you punch fast. but that is only because you use so much engery holding it up and punching when you let it go you feel like your hands is light. but it%26#039;s just feels that way because your use to the pressure of the weight your not punching faster. and muscle does not help punching power. fedor emieaneko is the world champ and he looks like a pills berry dough boy but that guy got some power punches.|||Wouldn%26#039;t be recommended by an intelligent trainer or a doctor, but its an excellent idea if you want to damage your shoulder joints and possibly tear some ligaments, tendons, or muscles. Don%26#039;t do it dude.|||You%26#039;d have to be very careful not to hurt yourself.

However you%26#039;re not likely to increase your either mass or speed more by using the weights when you shadow box. SB is about tightening and untightening muscles. To gain muscle mass use the weights separately.|||Sure do karate punches but be carful not to hyper extend your elbows.|||ur inherently weak......try bench pressing and jump roping|||There are 2 differing schools on this idea... 1) It helps and should be done. 2) NEVER EVER USE WIEGHTS!!!

Personally I think they help with speed. However if you use them use light wieghts. 1 or 2 pounds only! Another alternative is to get some rubber resistance tubing, approxinmately 2ft long (depending on your size) and showdow box that way. (For an example of what I%26#039;m talking about go here... http://www.ringside.com/DETAIL.ASPX?ID=2...

Personally I use both methods... Good luck!|||that can be a great exersice, but it depends what you want musclemass or endurance if u want mass than try lifting heavy for 3-4 set of ten-twelwe if you want endurance than do lots of reps bruce lee shadow boxed with dumbells

What are some good boxing punch mitt drills?

I%26#039;ve been hitting a heavy bag, speed bag, shadow boxing for about 3 months now. Last week I got some punch mitts, and a friend of mine has been helping me train.

My question is, what are some good training drills with the punch mitts? Should I be doing 3 minute rounds like I do on the heavy bag? If so, how many rounds? Any suggestion would be appreciated.|||Have him give you a good whack with them if you leave your self open, DON%26#039;T HIT BACK, HAVE HIM MOVE HIS HANDS TRYING TO GET YOU TO LEAVE YOURSELF OPEN, SO HE CAN WHACK YOU UPSIDE THE HEAD WITH THE PUNCH MITTS, PUNCH WITH ONE HAND AT A TIME AND HIT BOTH MITTS AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN LOAD YOUR HANS WITH SOME WEIGHTS AND PUNCH THE MITTS. HAVE HIM PUSH YOU BACK AND TRY TO STOP HIM WITH PUNCHES|||Join a boxing gym.|||it depends what your trying to accomplish. for coordination id mix up my combos and move me head a lot and do a lot of pivoting. for straight conditioning throw a lot of straight punches non stop for short bursts of time. take bout a 3-5 sec breather then repeat.

Have you ever hurt yourself shadow boxing?

I have, lol. I pulled the punch back to myseld to wildly and hit my chin, lol.|||Never did.|||Yes.

I was testing my range near a wall, misjudged and hit a knuckle. I did the same thing on a double end bag once, just shadow boxing mostly and hit the turnbuckle, which really hurt. I think I may have hit a door once too while just dancing around shadow boxing.

I am a bit of a klutz (last month I closed the car door on my finger, which removed about 5 cm of flesh and needed 3 stitches).

So shadow boxing should be safe for most other people, other than us.|||Absolutely not. Have a great day!|||lol no

How to improve speed and power in boxing?

What kind of training do I need to improve speed and power %26quot;strength%26quot; when boxing?

Is it a good idea to shadow box while holding weights in my hands|||First things first, master your form slowly and gradually build speed you can generate more power from a punch that has good form than one you force. Make sure you have someone watching and critiqueing you when you start or you will build bad habits.

If you decide to shadow box with weights, don%26#039;t fully extend your punches and don%26#039;t throw full speed or you will hurt yourself even if it%26#039;s with light weights.

A little routine I did for a while was 4 rounds 3 minutes each with minimal rest in between

1st round - 8 lb. weights went as slowly as I could with the best form possible

drop the 8%26#039;s and grab 5%26#039;s

2nd round - 5 lb. weights picked up the speed a hair still focusing on form

drop the 5%26#039;s and grab 2%26#039;s or 3%26#039;s

3rd round - go about 75% speed (still not fully extending punches) really concentrate on bringing your hands back to defensive position.

drop the weights

4th round - go full speed, go all out.

You will be amazed at the results.

To really be able to tell if you are hitting harder you need to actually be hitting something like focus mitts or a heavy bag.

Remember this is the order your training should go

1) Conditioning

2) Form

3) Speed

4) Power

I%26#039;m not sure what a shadow box fence is, could you give more details?|||1. Dig 3 foot hole with post hole digger. Starting with the first post and last post of one side. Put a 4 x 4 x 8 post in hole, level and cement.

2. Run a tight string line from top of each post to mark the top of remaining posts.

3. Put in the rest of your posts at 8 ft. centers using your string line for top of post.

4. Attach 2 x 4 x 8 horizontally on posts. One even with top of post, one going down middle of post and one runnig on bottom about a foot from the ground.

5. Rest your 6ft dog ear slat on the ground on one end, level and mount to 2 x 4 with two nails/screws per slat touching 2 x 4 or 6 per slat. Repeat on other side. Run a string line from top of one slat to top of other. This marks the top of remaining slats.

6. Space slats 2 to 3 inches apart and mount using string line to mark top and level to make sure they are straight up and down.

7 wWen finished, repeat on other side using your gaps from first side to figure the middle of slat on this side.

Should I paint the chair rail and shadow box the same color?

do i paint the chair rail and shadow boxes the same color, say white, then the walls two different colors or the walls the same color? Is there a rule of thumb for this?|||Definitely paint the chair rail and shadow box the same and the walls two different colors|||The wainscot or shadow box as you call it is a decorative element designed to look like carved wood paneling. You want focal points in a room but you don%26#039;t want too many...also you want focal points in what I call the %26quot;strike zone%26quot;, the area between your hips and the top of your head. This is the area of the room our eyes are most directed to because of our upright orientation. You do not ever want to direct your eyes to marching boxes along the bottom of the wall but rather in the area of eye contact (approximately 4.5 feet to 6 feet from the ground). Painting the chair rail and the entire area under it all the same color and in a semi-gloss finish will give the illusion of rich carved wooden paneling. It is most effective then when you paint the walls above a different color. Keep all four walls the same, this is not the place for accent walls, your accent is your wainscot. This way you can have a solid and cohesive color plan and put your color where your eye will appreciate it the most.

I just thought of a new sport. We have boxing, we have kickboxing, shadow boxing, what about boxing with shoe?

What if we could box with our shoes on our hands?|||omg...|||do ya really think that would be practical?|||yea, go ahead and do that

If you shadow box with weights then shadow boxing without get you faster??

It may make you faster if you are not in top condition. Most coaches opine that a fighter who is already in fighting shape won%26#039;t get faster by punching with weights.

However, it still has its benefits. It can increase your %26quot;strength endurance%26quot;, which is an aspect of strength that is hard to train solely by punching alone.

A major problem with weighted punching is that you have to decelerate the weight at the end of the punch in order to avoid wrecking your joints. This literally trains the antagonist muscles -- those muscles that, when contracted, work to slow your punch down -- and can have a deleterious affect on punching speed and power. Therefore, weighted punching should only be done when building a base of strength, not when you are in training for a fight.

If you want to add strength training to your routine, use exercises that don%26#039;t have an element of deceleration at the end. A medicine-ball slam or wall throw, for instance, allows you to accelerate against resistance without the need to slow down the weight at the end of the movement. Of course, you can say the same thing about heavy-bag training; it%26#039;s why the heavy-bag is considered the number one tool for increasing speed and power.|||I don,t know about that because when I ran track we wore weights on our ankles thinking that when we took them of it would make us faster it did not work and the weights mess up my ankles I don,t think they could hurt I can see where they would make your shoulders stronger but make you faster I don,t think so|||that%26#039;s a great idea for boxing. it will make your shoulders stronger and help you raise the threshold of lactic acid so you can fight longer. do lots of sets of 3 minutes but only but a 15 second break when doing it with weights|||I imagine that it would be a lot like running with ankle weights. After you get use to it then take the weight off you run faster. I imagine it would be the same shadow boxing with weights.|||yes it will obviously make you faster that is the whole point of the exercise and why we do it.|||it has a better chance of injuring you.

It will not make you faster.

I want to mamke a shadow box to show my love for my girlfriend, just need some ideas....?

I want to mix together a few things.

1) Our first kiss was on the beach. I want to drive to the beach and use that sand.

2) Roses, She loves roses. I can dry them out and put them on there

ANy other ideas?

Also how can I use the sand from the beach in a shadow box? Im just curious what everyone thinks about setting this up. I want to hear all your ideas and suggestions!|||Awwww that%26#039;s so sweet! I made a boyfriend a shadow box one and he loved it! The key to creating a shadow box is to make it completely personal and romantic. What you have so far for ideas sounds good, so here are a few more suggestions.

- if you%26#039;ve ever taken any photo-booth type picture in a mall or something, include it in there. These pictures are often silly ones, which will definitely make her smile.

- throw in little toys or gadgets that may represent inside jokes.

-burn her a mixed CD of all the songs that remind you of her, and make an inside pamphlet with paper [preferably on the computer with a program like %26quot;MS Paint%26quot; or something], telling her why you picked those songs. Have a picture of you two be the cover. Awww :]

- It%26#039;s sorta corny, but write her a letter listing every single quality you love about her, and explain a couple sentences long why you love those qualities.

- put a giftcard [for any dollar amount] of the first place you guys ever went out to eat. She%26#039;ll love that you remember! If you don%26#039;t, non-chalantly bring it up and ask her about it.

- if you are creative, write her a poem. It doesn%26#039;t have to be amazing, or even serious for that matter. Just something small and funny to show that you tried.

**Most girls are suckers for romantic guys, trust me. It%26#039;s completely adorable that you are making her a shadow box. I wish my boyfriend would make me one!

It sounds like you%26#039;re gonna master this gift. I wish you the very best! Happy Holidays! :]|||Sounds like the way my husband proposed to me.

You can either glue some sand onto the bottom of the box...or put it in a tiny jar from a craft store.

Add a leaf from your first walk and some movie ticket stubbs (or some other momento of a fun date), a picture of the two of you..and maybe a teeny rocking chair from the dollhouse section of the craft store...%26quot;ill love you til the rocking chair%26quot;....mmmm|||Sounds good.

WTF is a shadow box?|||Get some sand colored paint and mix it with sand from the beach, you want the texture to be really gritty. Spread the paint and sand mixture evenly onto the box. Let it dry and then glue some seashells around the outside of the box. You can fill it with some dried or silk rose petals or buds. The paint and sand mixture will resemble wet sand when it is dry. I did that on the frame of bathroom mirror and it looks awesome.|||for the sand I would find a small bottle with a cork and glue the bottle down...thsi way there won%26#039;t be any mess of sand if you were to just glue that down...

I would place a picture of you 2 in the center of the box, or do like a flim strip type photo(looks just like a fil strip but with visible pictures of yourselves) our you two across the box....

Umm you could add movie ticket stubs to the box(if ya have them)

I would find a nice big embelishment to glue to once corner of the box, in the shape of a heart or something of that matter.

Put a quote along the bottom of the box that best describes how you feel about her.

anything that is small, memorable to you 2, and can be glued into the shadow box forever is something you could put in there|||You can either glue the sand to a piece of paper for the backdrop or maybe put it in a pretty jar and set it in the shadow box. If u have saved anything from your time together, like movie tickets or matchbook from a restaurant or anything that would be cool to put in there, anything sentimental girls love, great idea, she should love it!

What does the term, 'shadow boxing' mean... not in a literal sense in regards to boxing.?

It%26#039;s derived from the actual experience of shadow boxing. It means to fight an imaginary opponent that%26#039;s as good as your shadow (that is, as good as _you_). Usually, this does not mean the preparation for a physical fight, but your own internal preparation for a debate, or something similar.

Sometimes the term is pejorative - fighting against your own illusory worst enemy (yourself, that is, knowing all your moves) can cause you to over-think a position, out of fear.|||The only %26quot;shadow boxing%26quot; I know of is in the decorative sense. A shadow box is like a picture frame, but deeper to allow for 3D objects like baby%26#039;s first outfit, or shoes, flowers, toys, etc...|||i know it can be a type of keepsake. like a memory box

you have a box filled with things, usually for a gift, and you fill it with memorys that you and a person share.|||Shadow boxing can mean that people are %26#039;arguing%26#039; or competing with each other in a way which is isnt so direct. An example would be Google is shadow boxing with Yahoo to see who gains the share of the search market.

When im standing straight up and i turn my body side to side shadow box with my mouth open i here wheezing?

This is really weird. i have this pain in the middle of my chest bone area. and when i shadow box or turn my body from left to right in a quite room. i can here wheezing coming out of my mouth? anyone experience this?|||I can also hear the wheezing whenever I do that (discovered it as a teenager and it sure freaked me out), but I%26#039;m perfectly fine, so I don%26#039;t think the pain in the middle of your chest is related to it.

Does shadow boxing help your whole body?

Actually if shoadow boxing is properly executed it helps bobbing and weaving which is done by bending the knees and moving forward invisioning bobbing weaving to, both, the inside and out side of thrown punches as well as improve fade and sway techniques as well as improves breaking and ducking cordination. Not to mention the %26quot;all important%26quot; hand-eye cordination any fighter neeeds. An understanding of speed can be lucked into sometimes shadow boxing as well.

All the things I just mentioned above are executed using the entire body so the proper answer to your question is a big YES ...... shadow boxing does help your whole body as well as the mental aspect of cordination and movement as well.|||shadow boxing doesn%26#039;t help the whole body but if done right it is a great low impact aerobics and works the arms, legs, heart and lungs. make sure that you never over extended your arms at the elbows as this will hurt. shadow boxing in front of a mirror is the best way as you can see how straight your punches are and you can aim at your face and not punch to low. a good coach or trainer helps and you don%26#039;t need to fight to learn how to box.|||sure why not

Hope this helps

It would help if you chose a theme, but I think this a very good question to ask I hope my answer help you.|||You could put stuff that relates to any hobbies he has or pictures of accomplishments he has done.|||Put somethings in the box that he likes; example baseball cards; maybe a hot wheels car. Maybe a baseball. I have a shadow box and in the box I have my letters from Track/Cross Country/Baseball %26amp; Academics. I also have several ribbons I earned in school Academic Fairs.

Should you pull your punches while shadow boxing to avoid hyper extension of the elbow and potensial injury?

Rocco Jones ~

Nope, full extension and snap! The one thing in my opinion that anyone should do while shadow boxing is to pretend you%26#039;re punching through the target not at the target. It all depends how workout but usually, shadowboxing is performed well after you%26#039;ve warmed up.

Thanks for the question Rocco Jones.

Sorry, j v it looks like we crossed each other paths (same answer) as I was thanking Rocco......Dido!|||Believe it or not I had to think about this from two points of view first from a boxers view because when you shadow box you put a lot of stress on your joints when you throw a punch at the air full force and there is a risk of injury but on the other hand as a trainer we teach you are going to fight like you train so you have to extend your arm all the way out this is a Good question and I bet you a lot of boxers don,t extend their arms all the way out when shadow boxing and this would lead to getting tired in the middle of a fight and throwing punches short|||no,,,,full extension and snap|||first off I feel when you Shadow box its just that shadow.....I would tell an inexperienced fighter to not throw with all he has I would use it as a secondary warm up exercise before I step into the ring to spar. Foremost lots of stretching before you do any boxing I always had a sweat going before steeping into the ring to spar. Also listen to your body it will tell what feels good|||No. Full extension and snap, especially during shadow boxing teaches you to punch through your target. %26quot;Pulling%26quot; punches creates a bad habit that can have a very negative effect in the ring.

%26lt;edit%26gt; Santana D: What a great answer! :) I gave you a thumbs up for that one!|||Yep.

Is shadow boxing good exercise?

would it strengthen my arms.. chest.. or punching power in any way?|||shadow boxing is for your technique it is not a cardio excercise at all, if you want to do something that will strengthen your arms, chest punch a speed bag or a punching bag with speed and power that will make you gain muscle in those areas.|||I will do nothing for power or strength. Jimmy is totaly right. Shadow boxing is arobic that refines your combos. Its a good thing even doing it slow. After you get home from training- close your eyes and go through your combos visulize where there hitting your opponent. Reapet- repeat-repeat. Your combos should be second nature and this a great way to build that when you cant be at the gym.|||Shadow boxing is for cardio and to practice technique..Punching the bag and push-ups will give you power|||i would say so... don%26#039;t know about strength, but good for working up a sweat.
