What size weights should you shadow box with?

Personally, I would say no more than two or three pounds. If you are not careful, you could injury yourself with weight over what I just suggested.|||I use 5lbs. (5%26#039; 6%26quot; @ 136 lbs) and gone as high as 8lbs. However I have been training for many years.

I thoroughly recommend that you begin with 1lb weights or less and slowly work to heavier ones.

DO NOT use full speed or power... something will give, either your elbow or shoulder (bones and/or muscles).

Also, be very careful when returning your punch to guard position... one crack to your head/chin/mouth will really set your training back (for the record, I have never done this).

What could i put in a shadow box for the scarlet letter?

a pen|||Well, certainly a scarlet %26quot;A.%26quot;

Maybe you could make use of these images somehow....

Place to buy a shadow box?

My lil boy is 4 and just finished his first season of soccer. I want this memory cherished. And I was thinking a getting a shadow box and putting his soccer tshirt, his medal and his team pic in it. But everywhere I look i either cant find a shadow box or if i do its extremely expensive. So can anyone tell me a goood place to buy one that isnt really expensive. I mean, i know they arent really cheap, but I am not looking to go broke buying one either. Help !!!|||You can make your own by purchasing 2 identical picture frames(try to find ones with flat fronts and very plain) and remove the cardboard backing and the glass %26quot;points%26quot; from the back of one frame. On the other frame give the surface a quick sand to remove wax and give it a %26quot;tooth%26quot; to hold glue. Glue the other frame right on top of the sanded frame with wood glue and allow to dry overnight. Remove the backing of the bottom frame and cover with fabric or decorative paper ( you might want to use the shirt as the backdrop ) and replace in the frame using the glass points to hold it in then arrange the other elements inside your new shadow box. Another alternative would be to buy a very large unfinished wooden tray with deep edges from the craft store and paint it in the team colors and after arranging your elements inside cover the front with a piece of plexiglass and attach with construction adhesive. Cover the glued areas with some decorative trim or braid.|||I have seen them in Michaels crafts. But if you save the coupon in the sunday paper michaels allways a 40% off purchase. Unless a art supply cataloge company like Dick Blick .. I would save the coupon at michaels .. and go there.|||a craft store is a good place to start.|||Try a Craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michael%26#039;s.

Shadow Box?

I am working on a project and was wondering if any body has any advice on how to make a large wooden shadow box. It won%26#039;t have any glass and needs to be big enough to fit on an easil. I am going to be putting a wooden cross in it that will be the size on a sheet of computor paper. It will also hold to sheets of paper that will be in small frames.

If anbody could help I would really appreciate it, thanx.|||Here is the ehow solution.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2050184_build-sh...|||Make it just like a picture frame :-)

Get some thin wood (1/4 to 1/2%26quot; thick) and use it on edge. Miter the joints. Rabbet out the back to receive a back plate. Then assemble with nails and glue on the corners. Insert and tack in the back plate. Finish and you%26#039;re done.|||I don%26#039;t mean to be dumb but what are you asking? If you can%26#039;t have a glass front that it doesn%26#039;t sound like a traditional shadow box to me, I am confused

I need a website to help me setup a shadow box (military)?

Try these websites for some ideas on what you would like your shadowbox to look like. There are some basic designs that are common and can be found online or on many military bases (if you have access).

I'm wanting to create a wedding/thank you shadow box for my and my fiance's parents....?

I thought about including our invitation and several other paper items related to the wedding as well as a baby picture of him and a baby picture of me as well as one of us together today. Do you think this would be a good gift to give them at the rehearsal dinner as the bridal attendants also receive theirs?|||It sounds like a good gift and an appropriate time to give it, but I would do a series of important life-moments ending in your engagement photo -but only focused on one person. Like photos of the bride for the brides parents and photos of the groom for the grooms parents. Like, why would your Mom want a baby picture of your husband? The one with each of your baby pictures would be great to hang in your own home, though! Super cute!|||Very thoughtful and personal. Not something that is likely to get tossed in a drawer and forgotten about or covered in dust like so many collectible type gifts.|||Ooo I love this idea! I might actually borrow it too!

I would put maybe a little note thanking them for everything too...

Shadow Boxes?

I had NO ideas on what to get my boyfriend for christmas..so i was thinking.

He has tons of track medals (the ones on the ribbons!) they%26#039;re really nice, but they%26#039;re just stacked on top of each other hanging on his dresser. I was thinking of getting a shadow box (or 2) made so he can display them. First of all, i was wondering if anyone thinks this is a good idea. Second, where do you go to get a shadow box made? a framing shop? Thanks for the help!|||That sounds like a neat idea! I got my shadow boxes a Micheals with their 40% off cupons they have almost every week in our sunday paper. ;) They are premade boxes. It would be much more expensive to have them custom made. I would think that any shop like Micheals or Hobby lobby would have them.|||Good idea! You can purchase them at most craft stores,ie, Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I%26#039;d try Wal-Mart, too.|||First that is a realy good idea for a great gift. You can have one built at a picture frame shop.

How do i fix my old christening gown in shadow box frame?

Cut a piece of card that will fit inside the frame and then wrap the gown around the card with only the bits you want to see showing from the front. Then use pins or marking tape to secure the back.

Depending on how bulky it now is, you need to secure the whole thing to the base of the frame. Using double sided tape is an option.

Finally - very carefully fit everything together. You may need to take it back out to adjust it, so don%26#039;t tape the back up just yet until you%26#039;re happy its where you want it.|||this is automotive. try home and garden. and provide more detail as to what you want to do.

I've been boxing for a month now and right shoulder hurts (burning sensation), Should I rest or continue?

Should I get it X-rayed.. it doesnt hurt during the day just when I warmup or do boxing training excercises (Medicine ball, Aerobic steps, Shadow Boxing) and ofcourse hurts the most when sparring. Im fairly new, about a month into boxing. Thanks|||Give it a rest. I had an injury like this (I do taekwondo) and I just gave it a rest for a while. Eventually it went away. Just leave it to heal. If it gets no better after a few days, see a doctor.|||Keep going! No pain, no gain!|||You can%26#039;t just have an x-ray because you want one - a doctor must order it. See your doctor, and he or she will decide if an x-ray is necessary.|||Same thing happens to me whenever I play football or wrestle. I have bad shoulders. I know it sucks but you need to rest it for a little.

I want to make a shadow box for my boyfriend for his birthday and i just can't bring it al together, any idea?

i just got back from michaels and i picked up a few things for this shadow box. i came back with some pretty paper, happy birthday glue on stickers and some clipboard stickers that say I love you, and little love quotes. I had all ready got a picture of us two and a rose that symbolizes us. Thats as far as i%26#039;ve got. i%26#039;m trying to make it all look 3d but i just can%26#039;t put it together. BOXING GLOVES!!!? I have just bought some 12oz Everlast training gloves. ?

On the package the gloves say that they are made for martial arts, aerobic or shadow boxing. They dont seem to have too much padding. I will be using the gloves to box with not in a league or anything but around the neighborhood. We will be having full out matches and i was wondering if i should get the everlast amateur boxing gloves. Please let me know quickly so i know if i should return them. Also if u have any other reccomendations please let me know.|||Take them back and exchange them for regular 16 oz Boxing gloves. That is if u intend to %26#039;Box%26#039; not do a homemade MMA. The gloves u have now will rip a hole in someone%26#039;s face. If u can, get a pair of Reyes or all leather Everlast gloves. Does anyone know anthing of the price of a budwiser clydesales shadow box?????

How much is the naruto shadow box going to be?

i just got the October (issue 11) issue of SJ and it says somthing about a naruto Shadow Box (with volumes 1-27 in it ) comming out in november.

How much will it be (or an estimate)|||Suggested Retail: $189.95

Assuming you live in the United States, you%26#039;d spend $214.65 buying them individually, plus local sales tax.

Sounds like savings to me.|||go to www.bn.com (aka barnes and noble book store online) they sell the naruto shadow box for like $135.00 new. There are only 5,000 copies of the shadow box so buy one soon cuz they%26#039;ll sell fast because of the awesome premium items like a poster, sticker and other stuff that it comes with. Report Abuse

How much would the Naruto Shadow Box be worth if I sold it now?

Any ideas? =]|||I%26#039;d probably say around the same amout you paid for it if they still have it in production. But it aso depends on what condition it%26#039;s in and how your trying to sell it.|||OVER 9000!!!

I am looking for 1930's souvenirs for a shadow box. Anyone have any ideas??

what can I put in the display to fancy it up. I have a newspaper centered along with photographs surrounding the paper.

Suggestions: buttons, postcards and such??|||What about different postcards from the era? There are plenty of them on ebay, or you can even find books of postcards from the year on Amazon. I might also look for some old buttons, perhaps some lace or something like that. Maybe some old fabric that would be cool and give it some texture. You might also want to find a President Roosevelt Pin he was very big at the time and anyone born during that time period would remember the election.

What about old stamps? Again you can find these on ebay. Stamps from the time period would be cool and they would remember them. If you can find a rations book my mom still remembers those. Again check ebay.

Life Magazine started in 1936 it might cool to include some pictures or articles from it.

If you could find a small radio like something used for scrap booking that would be neat, that is what everyone did for entertainment listen to the radio. Also Monopoly started back then I have seen stickers and embellishments at the scrapbook store that would be neat get like the board and a get out of jail free card. Check ebay and the internet for scrapbook embellishments. You can find them and they are like $4.00.

Baseball! Baseball was still an American past time during the 30%26#039;s find some old looking baseball cards, bats, gloves. Again you can use scrapbook embellishments they will work. Yes you can find %26quot;old%26quot; baseball stuff they have some at my scrapbook store.

An airplane of some sorts would be good, the US was advancing in airplane technology, there was Erheart and Landenberg maybe you could find something about them and include it in your box.

Don%26#039;t forget the dust bowl was during this time maybe you could find something to represent that.

Route 66 was big and was being built Americans followed it during the Dust Bowl to CA to find a better life maybe a 66 shield or something like that would work for you.

The original War of the Worlds was broadcasted in the late 30%26#039;s maybe you could find something about the radio show; everyone remembers the panic that caused. Still a great broadcast to listen to!

Well I hope this helps you, sometimes you just have to look %26quot;outside%26quot; the box for objects. I totally recommend checking out your local scrapbook store or online I scrapbook and can find tons of things for each decade! Good luck I wish I could see the final project!|||William is correct, if you search for exactly what you typed, the actual souvenirs will be there for you.

Things that were new then were the Empire State Building; Air Mail; RCA Victor recordings; The World%26#039;s fastest steam locomotive; Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz; anything Art Deco; swing music; radio programs of all sorts.

I don%26#039;t know how big your shadow box is, so maybe you can find art deco stuff that is the right size.

.|||Coins. Photos of people from that era.|||Very easy. Just go to Ebay and type in a search fore exactly what you%26#039;re looking for, i.e. %26quot;1930%26#039;s buttons, postcards, etc.%26quot; You%26#039;ll be amazed at what you find from all over the world.

Why does my cat shadow box?

My cat who I think is part bobcat sits on her hind paws(legs). then she lifts her front paws(legs) and starts boxing. Her eyes look like she is in a trance when she is doing this. I have had many cats before and not of them act like this. I even asked my friend who is a vet for the answer. She has no idea. Help|||I don%26#039;t know as my cat does this too|||because it is in the nature of the cat to puzzle us betimes...they do weird things just to make us wonder...which is part of their mystique and charm.

and because they can.

and because they are cats.|||Cats naturally %26quot;see%26quot; other beings that we do not. It%26#039;s not anything scary; they are just more attuned to other ways of

looking at things, and other planes of life that run parallel

with ours. We, two-leggeds, have trained our minds to not see these things, telling ourselves they aren%26#039;t real and rational. Cats have no such problem with this; they get great

amounts of amusement and thoughts from there.

Since your cat is an %26quot;only%26quot;, she%26#039;s playing with others you can%26#039;t see. Being part bobcat, she is very intelligent and

loves to exercise.

If you can, and you think she%26#039;d accept it, a playmate on this plane of existence might be a good idea. Our four keep each other such company, run through the house like

hooligans (taking turns, mostly) and sleeping together.

She just sounds like a lovely cat.|||Cats find ways to amuse themselves that are beyond human perceptions. She is perfectly normal and there%26#039;s nothing to worry about.|||Playfighting. Cats%26#039; play involves make-believe fighting, stalking, pouncing, and yes, killing. If your little girl is part bobcat, she will naturally be more aggressive than the average housecat. Go with it, just don%26#039;t get into roughhouse play sessions with her, as she will go for it all too enthusiastically and scratch you to pieces.

Antique Shadow Box?

I bought a antique shadow box at a yard sale. It was in sad shape, but it cleaned up wonderfully, except for the back of the shadow box. It%26#039;s a mirror and I cannot get stains or fog off of it. Any suggestions? Thanks|||Remove Mirror and go to a Plastic Supply store, Have Size to replace it with a Sheet of Plexaglass coated Mirror Material, --- Antique or not the plastic will look much better and last twice as long.|||try vinegar its good for mirrors so should work wonders|||If it is really an antique (over 100 yrs old) there likely isn%26#039;t much you can do for the mirror. The silver on the back isn%26#039;t the same stuff they use today. But you could check with a glass shop to see what they recommend. An appraiser could probably give you the names of conservators or restorers. That would get you started with advice anyway.

Personally, I%26#039;d start hitting the search engines, specifically Google%26#039;s News search. Usenet archives can be a good hit, since it isn%26#039;t full of advertisements and misleading webpages just looking to make you buy something.

Is it better to shadow box slow or fast?

slow or fast with weights? without?|||Do all, with weights in the beginning and then explode at the end of your training. Do combinations.|||try slow to better understand the form and the other possibilities speed will come on it%26#039;s own wiets can help|||start to shadow box slow and then move on faster as you get the technique better.|||Do both practice slowly to master the technique and speed when you use weights. Can anyone help me with anchoring something in a shadow box???

My girlfriend and I have made a shaow box for a present for the wedding. We can not find a way to secure the glasses that we have though. Can any one help?|||When glue is used on a heavy object, it eventually lets go, or it rips away the paper/fabric backing from the backdrop - either way, the object falls.

When making professional shadow-boxes, heavy items are secured to the backdrop with wire. Make a pinhole in the backdrop on either side of the item, hopefully beneath it so it shows less, then thread the wire through and around the object at the narrowest point.

Yes, it shows. But it stays put forever. You can try monofilament fishing wire if that%26#039;s an issue.|||Have you tried metal glue? You can order it from this scrapbook website called www.scrapjazz.com . You could also try a craft or automotive store.|||use %26quot;fun-tack%26quot; it%26#039;s a non-permanent clay-like adhesive. If I shadow box with a concrete wall will I have awesome knuckles like Oh Dae Su?

Or will I just shatter my hand?

Oh Dae Su is the protagonist in the movie Old Boy. His knuckles are scarred because while he was imprisoned for 10 years he shadow boxed with the walls to pass the time.

I think you could do that as much as you want. I suspect concrete walls aren%26#039;t an opponent you%26#039;d want to hit back, though... busted knuckles sounds like a more likely result.|||Oh Dae Su is a character in a movie. Punching walls will only result in one thing, broken bones.|||ahh that was cool! but also typical of any action movie. they come at him one or two at a time. if they had ganged up on him like zombies he probably wouldn%26#039;t have won. just saying

Shadow box display help?

i have a sterling silver and fork from when i was a baby that i%26#039;d like to display in my daughter%26#039;s nursery. i want to use a black shadow box, but put a pattern (wallpaper, a print out from istockphoto.com, etc.) behind it. her nursery is celery green and all accents are black and white, so i%26#039;m looking for a black and white pattern. any suggestions? already in the room are a black and white toile, gingham, and floral. links are most helpful.|||repeat one of the prints you already have. the black and white toile would be gorgeous if there is enough black to provide the necessary contrast. Both the silver ware and the fabric have a vintage feel to them.

Besides pins, how can I mount things in a shadow box?

Or are pins all you can use?

I%26#039;m using a shadow box to make a present for my boyfriend--I wanted to put pictures, ticket stubs, dried flowers, etc. in it, but is there any other way to mount them? I don%26#039;t really want to use pins. If there%26#039;s no other way, could I use something besides a shadow box?

Thank you!|||Foam tape that you can get in craft or office supply stores. It will lift the items off the background. You can layer several pieces together to even add more dimension. (it%26#039;s double sided).|||two sided sticky tape or hot glue|||Glue Dots are great. You can find them at any craft store. You can get them in different strengths. From low tack(if this is something you want to take apart later) or super high tack for a permanent fix. Hope this helps. Good luck:)|||Depending on what you are mounting, try decorative brads, scrap booking eyelets or scrap booking brads. Some of them are very pretty or you can get plain colored ones and they all come in a variety of sizes and colors. Hope this helps you out.|||There is also something called sticky tack - it is blue and it is tacky - sort of like silly putty. You will find at a craft store, maybe the grocery store, it is fairly easy to find. Otherwise, you might try a picture frame and make a collage of the items, as long as they are mostly flat.|||I%26#039;ve used velcro, the sticky back kind. You could find, buy or make all kinds of things that are just associated with the two of you, or each of you.... anything small enough to stand, hang or glue in your shadow box.

Some possibilities would be:

puzzle-pieces or cutouts of the 2 states or cities you%26#039;re in, or other representations of the places

a tiny phone, computer, or letter --however you most often communicate

hobbies or interests

favorite movies, books, events you like, or that you both did

any gifts you%26#039;ve given each other

important dates marked on a tiny calendar

things associated with any plans you might have in the future

type of clothing or individual item you wear a lot

jobs/schools

I work with polymer clay and any of those things could be made from it. Or you could use an air-dry clay or just paper, craft balsa wood, or various materials and items from around the house. Or you could use drawings or scans or magazine images, etc. If using scans or even photocopies, you can shrink them down to a size that will fit on one of the walls, or stand the images up by attaching something stiff behind them(cured/dried clay, toothpick, cardstock, wood cube or even bead), etc.... or make a little base for it to stick into, etc.

What do you think of the URBAN DECAY Sustainable Shadow Box?

I bought this from Sephora for $36 during my winter break.

The colors I really love are YDK (a really nice shimmery bronze), Half Baked (a golden color), and Twice Baked (kind of a chocolate or brownie color). I use these colors everyday when I%26#039;m getting ready to go to my classes. I am considering buying these 3 colors in the full size. I also use Oil Slick wet as an eyeliner. Flipside, Flash, and Kiddie Pool are really bright colors that would be good for a night time look although I don%26#039;t use these too much.

The colors I don%26#039;t really care for are Uzi, Grifter, and Midnight Cowboy Rides again. Actually the colors are nice but there is too much glitter. The other seven colors in the box are shimmery and glitter is not an issue however with these 3, it%26#039;s literally like they packed craft glitter into these shadows. I don%26#039;t mind glitter if it has a finer texture and stays put but after using these 3 shadows, my face had glitter fallout everywhere. It kind of sucked that I couldn%26#039;t use these shadows since they were the only shadows light enough to be used as a highlight in the box.

The palette is okay...I really love YDK, Half Baked and Twice Baked and all of the colors have great pigmentation and blend nicely. I kind of wished that I had gotten the UD Ammo eye palette since the colors are more wearable for everyday and I think only one of the shadows are glittery. If you want the bright colors, I%26#039;d probably recommend getting their UD Deluxe Shadow Box. Their deluxe colors have a velvety texture, are easy to apply, and don%26#039;t contain glitter so it is a good buy if you don%26#039;t have it already.

Hope this helped!

Boxing has weighted gloves worked good for you?

im a amateur boxer and i am working on speed i do 3 rounds of shadow boxing with 3 lb weights and in the 4th round im alot faster but i was wondering about weighted gloves i seen on everlast.com have they worked good for speed and power training for you?|||Yeah it works for me... I used 3 lb weighted gloves and now I use 3 lb wrist weights as well... It helps a lot... also helps with stamina... When you get tired your arms usually start to get heavier but if you train to prevent that then you%26#039;ll be able to go all day if you wanted to.. and weighted wrists and hands are probably the best way to go for a boxer... What should i put in a "Golf Shadow Box"?

I%26#039;m making my Boyfriend a Shadow Box for our 1 Year Anniversary since he LOVES golf and for one of our first dates we went to go play golf. I have tons of pictures I%26#039;ve taken of him playing golf so I thought he would like a shadow box made just for him!! How do you shadow box in mma with the ground work and stuff?

so how do u shadow box in mma|||The same as you do in Muay Thai, Boxing and kickboxing.

The only differences is you intermittenly throw in sprawls. (i.e. fast dynamic drops of the hips to the mat and spring back up). Other than that is your full range of strikes in combinations.

Ground work is never shadowboxed, you get nothing from it. Shadowboxing is an aerobic activity, by doing it you get used to the breathing and moving and heart rate needed just to throw those blows in combinations, and to get used and acclimated to moving around.

Matwork requires a partner, because you need to feel leverage and only through working with someone does it give you any kind of cardio workout and use your muscles... otherwise you are just pantomimg going for submissions which don%26#039;t use a lot of energy.

Hope that is helpful.|||You don%26#039;t do too much ground work when you shadow-box. You might throw in a few takedowns or takedown defenses, but most ground work requires a partner, or at least a grappling dummy. It%26#039;s possible to %26quot;shadow wrestle%26quot;, in fact Dan Gable was known for it, but it%26#039;s far less realistic than shadow-boxing. For example, you might simulate a guard sweep, but without having a person there, there is no way to know how realistic it was, or where you made your mistakes, if any. With shadow-boxing, you can be pretty sure you%26#039;re throwing the same punch you%26#039;d use in an actual fight.|||Use your imagination. Sprawl, forward roll into an armbar, shrimp against your imaginary opponent.

How to make a shadow box ?

I made one for my husband for Christmas last year to display some of his awards %26amp; medals from the Navy. I bought a large shadow box from Hobby Lobby (they seem to be on sale all the time for 50% off!) Then I got some background paper %26amp; a piece of cardboard to fit in it. I covered the cardboard with the paper %26amp; started gluing %26amp; pinning all of the things I wanted in it to the covered cardboard. Finally, I slipped it in the box %26amp; presented it on Christmas Eve.|||Select craft board size for desired height and thickness of boxes. For the boxes shown below, we used 1/2 x 4 x 24%26quot; craft board pieces and 3/4 x 6 x 18%26quot; pieces for the blue shadow boxes above. Cut four pieces for the top, bottom, and sides with a handsaw or jigsaw. Attach craft board together at corners with particle board screws. Lay box on a square of oak board, and mark outline with a pencil. Cut the outline on the oak board to make the back. Attach back to the box with wood glue, and allow to dry. Select a flat moulding to trim out the box. With a miter box, cut corners to fit the shadow box edges. Secure moulding onto the edges with wood glue, and allow to dry. After priming these boxes, we painted them white, and then brushed them with glaze. For a simpler look, try constructing boxes without moulding. The trio of blue shadow boxes was painted with one coat of white paint, followed by a second coat of blue paint (Valspar, Sleepy Seaport #249-5, flat). For a weathered finish, we rubbed the edges with sandpaper.

Hi i am making a shadow box for mothers day. Does anyone have any pictures or ideas for it?

It could be a number of things...You could put in a good picture of you and your siblings when you were little, maybe a label or even a tiny bottle of her favorite perfume, maybe an antique looking fan, or drape a beautiful printed scarf in the box as a background, and arrange maybe a pearl necklace or a locket in the box along with the other items...Or if she likes a certain decorating style, such as southwestern, or japanese, you could do it like that...I am sure that whatever you come up with, she will love it..

Is it a bad idea to look in the mirror whilst shadow boxing?

As long as you dont fall in love with yourself in the mirror, your fine. what i mean by that is most fighters who train in front of the mirror almost always think they look good and start building their confidence in otherwords they get cocky by thinking they look good doing what they do, than they tend to forget the real reason they are in front of a mirror, other than that it%26#039;s a real good thing to shadow box in front of a mirror, i prefer without a mirror myself but everyone has their choices right.|||I agree with Santana|||no, it is in fact highly recommended to do so, to make sure you are doing everything properly|||yes|||Rocco Jones ~

What's shadow boxing?

What is it just punching in mid-air.|||Shadow boxing is just boxing and moving in relation to an imaginary opponent. It can be used to elevate your heart rate and warm your muscles and sometimes I have my students do a gentle, easy version of it and then stretch as opposed to doing jumping jacks and other boring exercises. This was also one of Bruce Lee%26#039;s main ideas with respect to training and developing one%26#039;s skill. He felt that it was more important to practice this than practicing the very regimented, more common types of drills and exercises that are prevalent in martial arts for developing a person%26#039;s skill.

It can also serve to help develop your balance, coordination, and muscle memory for doing difficult or complex combinations. By practicing doing combinations of three, four, or even five techniques repeatedly your body learns to gradually do them faster, more easily, with less effort and more power and not lock up. Some care has to be used at doing it at a faster, harder pace since you are not making contact with anything and so hyper extension and strains can sometime occur from it.|||Shadowboxing is an exercise used in the training for combat sports, especially, as its name implies, in boxing. It is used mainly to prepare the muscles before the person training engages in stronger physical activity. Shadow boxing with dumbbells?

Is this a good training method to gain strength as well as endurance in your harms to punch harder/faster?|||Great way to build SPEED with your punches. Don%26#039;t be dumb and go to 10-20 pounders. Start with 3 pounders. EVERYONE starts with 3 pounders, no exceptions. If you think it%26#039;s not enough, it%26#039;s cause your not punching long enough.

But yes, it%26#039;s a great training method.|||Yes, I agree with Chaos.....it%26#039;s great for speed training but use LOW weights. 2 or 3lbs max.

And be careful that you don%26#039;t punch you other hand with the weights.....kinda hurts!|||Yeah, it is. Karate champion in Japan is doing it and so is the K-1 middle weight champion Buakaw Por Pramuk(Muay Thai fighter in Thailand). Just hold the dumbbells real tight and start shadow boxing for about 5-30 minutes using a light weight. Don%26#039;t try to look good and use such heavy weights that you%26#039;ll only last couple of minutes or seconds. Because that%26#039;s not going to do you anything. What do you think? Using 1-5lb. and shadow boxing for 5 minutes, or using 20 lb. or more and only shadow box for about couple of seconds?

Anyways, use a weight that wouldn%26#039;t make you lose balance when you throw any kinds of punches. This training would also strengthen your grip which would help you make your punches heavier.|||It is excellent for not just gaining speed in punching but by also strengthening the exact muscles used in punching. Be cautious though not to lock your arms on the punches as this can damage your elbows.

http://markschat.blogspot.com Fighting and training methods for the unarmed martial artist.|||I use wrist/ankle while doing kata. Only, you have to be careful not to fully extend your elbow, which is improper form any way you put it.

No one should fully extend the elbow during a punch or strike, weights or not. Keep your elbows pointing down always.

Using the wrist ankle/weights keeps your hands free to perform the movement like you would if you were actually using them.

You have to bring down your speed. Punching too fast can cause your elbow, shoulder and or wrist to pull apart, which could cause injury.

If you have seen the Hung Ga practitioners with the iron rings on their arms, this is the type of training.

I also have a weighted vest for doing kata with 20 lbs of small plates in the plate compartments.

This is great training, but you really have to monitor yourself. Don%26#039;t worry about speed... with this type of training, it will come.|||Conditioning is a total package.

Throwing some punches with dumbells is fine as long as it is only a small part of your whole training regieme. In other words, as long as you do not spend more than one part of a ten point curcuit (say ten minutes or so out of an hour curcuit), then you should be fine.

I concur with the others that any weights used should be very light, and weighted gloves might be even better if you decide to do more than twenty minutes or so a day.

There are two reasons for this: one, there are better ways to build endurance and power; two, there is a risk of putting too much load on your joints IF you overdo the repetitions or weight.

My trainers were never big on speedbags or dumbell punching, mainly because they wanted lots of heavy bag work, double ended bag, skipping, running, medicine ball, pushups, situps, ball rolls, etc., and there is only so much time in a day to train.

Mike Tyson%26#039;s main focus in training for power was the heavy bag. So was Dempsey, Foreman, etc

The heavy bag can be worked for an hour a day, or more if you have strong hands, and it will yield better results, and is easier on your joints, provided you hit properly (straight wrist, striking point lower second and third knuckles, wraps, bag gloves, and do not push the bag, hit it.)

However, dumbell punching is certainly a useful tool, as long as it is not overdone and not your main focus for power and strength.

Hope that helps,

Cheers!|||I%26#039;m sure it works, but I prefer using wrist/ankle weights or weighted gloves . With those, I can practices punches, blocks and strikes, and not have to worry about dropping the weights.|||all good answers.. I think a weighted glove is the way to go.. because its more proportioned to your hand/fist just like a regular glove (give new meaning to the term heavy hands)

Shadow Boxing..?

I made 3 little clips in 1 with me shadowboxing, i was kinda paying around but it almost looked good, so im trying to get more opinions on it, its at youtube

If you could, watch it , tell me what ineed to work on, and what i have good potential in that would be cool, comment on youtube or here, thanks...|||I only watched the first minute and can say you have the potential. you have good reach and natural flexibility by the look.

Overall you move and hit okay for a guy who can%26#039;t box.

Get a trainer and learn to.

he will teach you to move around some more, keep your hands up, protect your body, probably triple your punching power by putting your body behind it instead of arm punches, teach you the most important thing about landing heavy shots and avoiding them- which is timing the other guy%26#039;s movement at the same time. and all the other stuff I can%26#039;t teach you here without a sparring partner.

I am sure you will do well at it.|||Fighter1987 pretty much said it. I will go ahead and mention that your punches are not thrown with force from your body. They are strictly arm punches, which wouldn%26#039;t be damaging in a match. Just go to a gym to learn how to throw proper punches. You%26#039;ve already mentioned something about your footwork at the end of the video, so no need in me going there.|||you ned to work on a whole lot of things. only thing to do is go to a boxing gym and start working with a trainer. best of luck to you but don%26#039;t relly on luck only hard work is what pays off

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncnRoKsEp...

If you could, watch it , tell me what ineed to work on, and what i have good potential in that would be cool, comment on youtube or here, thanks...|||I see you are keeping your chin down fairly well and standing tall to make better use of your height and reach advantage since you are a fairly big guy. Yes, definitely work on your foot work as you are to stationary and to easy to hit as well as not generating the power in your punches as much because your punches are only arm punches. At one point you almost fall forward off balance over your toes because your balance, body and height gets out to far over your toes and you have to catch yourself. Better footwork will keep this from happening and also get you moving more and add momentum behind those punches and jabs so that they are just not arm punches. If you do a search in my answers you will find how to move your feet when throwing a jab for instance and this will triple the power and increase the speed of yours as well as give you an angle to work with if you choose to. I would also bend and flex my knees a little more and that will aid in this.

In the third part you do move a little better but still you are to much in the same spot. Along with this I would also work on fighting and going backwards at the same time as that is one of the ways you can sometimes beat a big guy like yourself. As they go back some people don%26#039;t fight as well as when going forward; their chin comes up and hands drop or seperate and give you more in the way of openings and angles for you to attack while going forward. They also have less power and it makes it a little harder for them to just stand there and captialize on their reach and target practice using your head and face for a target if you are the shorter fighter.

The other thing I would do is work on developing a good hook. Those straight punches and combinations make your opponet move his hands and arms forward slightly out in front of his face and head thus opening up the sides for you to hit with a good hook. Defense will come with time and sparring and here again position, angles and your ability to move, turn, pivot, lean slightly (but not be off balance) and change the level of your head or position of it will all be enhanced with better footwork as well as giving you more power in your punches.|||Ok. At the momment you could do with improving, but you have taken no lessons and for someone in your position, your technique is ok. As mentioned above, go to a gym, practise, slow at first, then add speed and power over time. keep motivated and you will do well.

When throwing a quick, snapping punch while shadow boxing that jolts the head, does this damage the brain?

I%26#039;ve been practicing Martial Arts for over ten years, so I%26#039;m well aware of how to throw a proper punch and all that jazz, and am not in need of any lecturing, sermonizing, or chastising in this regard.

If I shadow box while slightly tense, sometimes the vigorous and rigorous execution of my punches will send jolts of kinetic energy torrenting back up through my arm and give my head a sudden shake - nothing substantial, mind you, but enough to make me cut it out, and when I observe it in the mirror, my head undergoes what appears to be a half an inch jolt, extremely quickly.

Could the effect of this energy surging through my body have any malign consequences on my brain, in that could it tear axons, cause shearing, or anything else of the sort? I realize the brain is pretty durable and well protected, elsewise mere jumping jacks and jogging on hard surfaces would cause it damage, but unlike those activities in where the head is simply bobbing up and down at a quick and exuberant rate, the motion from the punching is a more sudden, jerking one.

So can doing this cause any damage, or no? Or is contemporary silence ill equipped at this time to dislodge a comprehensive conclusion?|||It is widely believed that smaller jolts like that can cause damage if they happen often enough, but that doesn%26#039;t tell us much because it%26#039;s not quantified. It%26#039;s probably the product of repetitions x severity that counts.

|||%26quot;Contemporary science%26quot;?

I don%26#039;t know the details, but there has been a lot of study of neurological conditions related to impacts, lifestyle, etc. You might find someone more expert in this if you go to the health forum.

Just my opinion, I would think that the brain could survive all those jolts better than your joints could.

Shadow Boxing with dumbbells?

The other day I started some shadowboxing whilst holding a pair of 1.5kg dumbbells in each hand. After 5 minutes or so I noticed my punched were ALOT faster when not holding the dumbbells. Does this mean my punches were then more powerful then before Shadow Boxing?

(Power/Force= speed+weight) or something like that.|||No, it means you%26#039;re going to shred your elbows. Don%26#039;t shadow box with dumbbells in your hands. My dads been teaching me how to box as a pressure fighter. Would i ever make it in boxing if i gave it my all?|||in any sport, if you give it your all your going to have a chance in making it. you got to have heart and dedication. you should find a gym and trainer to train you unless your dad is your trainer.

This sounds stupid. But who finds it harder to throw punches without bigger boxing gloves on?

Most people train on bags and everything wearing gloves. Then when they take the gloves off they find it easier to punch because of it being lighter. This sounds weird but i find it easier to shadow box wearing gloves or wearing a jacket. When ive just got a t shirt on everythin feels too light and weird lol. Anyone else feel the same thing or am i just chatting ****?|||Boxers use this %26#039;light%26#039; feeling as a way of teaching there body to move at faster speeds. Your punch is only so fast with a glove on and when you take it off you punch slighty faster because its lighter. This gives your brain a chance to foresee the feeling of moving faster without straining the body. Then put the glove back on and try to match the new speed. Intervals of 100 punches with a glove and 100 with out would be a good start.

I learned this from practicing drums.|||The gloves are for a few reasons, the main one being to protect the boxers hands from becoming useless appendages.

They are also so that a one punch, with speed and force, does not kill the opponent.

I use to train with 16oz gloves. I boxed with 14oz.

One of my trainers used duct tape and added about 7oz to the palm of the gloves and 12oz to the forearms.

It was kinda dangerous, and we were all warned about what NOT to do.

Do NOT power punch, do NOT roundhouse. No Hooks, no Uppercuts.

The extra weighted gloves were for speed bag and shadow boxing.

In shadow, yes, roundhouse, uppercuts, digs, and fast low pummels , but was still dangerous because the extra weight could toss a joint or strain a tendon bad.

That is where we learned control.

I lost a few teeth, never was KO%26#039;ed, Laid a few opponents out first round. A few knocked me down first round.

Once you get the footwork and the upper body work in unison, one can be a quite formidable opponent.

Is a balancing act, is almost ballet.

I had fun, and always shook hands before and after a bout.|||Bigger boxing gloves don%26#039;t give the kind of power that 12 ounce give but you are sparring and not trying to do any serious damage to your opponent. If it was a pro match then the smaller gloves get into play. Keep in mind 16 ounce gloves you are wearing 2 pounds of padding on your hands. I box better without my shirt on even though I don%26#039;t have the body to go shirtless. So what.|||I know exactly what you mean. I have very fast hands too and sometimes when I take off my gloves, my hands move way too fast and lose form. There has been times when I accidentally punched myself in the jaw while trying to pull my arms back - lol.

is this a good excersise,|||get the wrist weights and shadow box with them and you will notice overtime that your punching speed improves. i do martial arts and a bouncer and my hand speed is very quick even compared to boxers that i work with. but take care not to use too heavy weights as you can strain ligaments and cause painful injuries|||Shadowboxing with dumbbells not good because they cause tendonitis in the elbows. and about cardio ...RUNNING is the best thing but i understand you can%26#039;t run because is cold i%26#039;m on the same situation..

so what you do bro is JUMP rope..

and lets say you are on a garage with wall A and B

so go in WALL A side of the room Then walk bending in direction of wall B with one knee and the other one touching the ground..do it six times then change legs etc..it works trust me|||Hey Mike,

it doesnt help much for health and all that, but if you have been off for a while and feel abit rusty it gives you chance to practice ur moves, depends how long you do it for aswell,if you do it for about 30 mins its a good workout depending if you throw half axx punches or not, It can be if you constantly move keeping your heart rate up. I would mix it up a bit...Box/sit ups/Box/side straddle hops/Box/ run in place....all shadow boxing.|||It does help a bit, but to be honest like the other guy said running is the best thing for that, and if its too cold like you surely u can get a skipping rope, that sure does take over for the running.

What does shadow boxing with 30-45lbs bumbells help you with?

Like most people have posted...It%26#039;ll help you injure yourself...

Anyone shadow boxing with weights will usually start with 2 lbs and work their way up. The highest I%26#039;ve ever seen anyone go is 7 lbs and that was a pro-fighter.

Keep in mind that the higher the weight, the slower you should be moving so as not to injure your elbows or shoulders in the process. Using 30 to 45 lbs dumbbells is like strapping on 20 lbs ankle weights and going for a run. The amount of stress you%26#039;ll end up creating on your joints (in this case, your knees) from the repeated movement will most likely hurt you rather than help you.

Also, shadowing boxing is kind of like doing a kata or form a full speed. I can already hear the boxers/kickboxers groaning at this, but it%26#039;s true. The point is to work on your technique (combinations, etc.). Adding weight will obviously help you, but the only time you should be adding on weight is when your technique is smooth and flows well.

If someone you know is using that much weight, they%26#039;re probably trying to show off more than anything...|||it might help you work out which one is actually the dumbbell?might help you with a hernia?dislocated elbow?wrist?rotater cuff?(trust me you dont want to do that it%26#039;s a lifetime injury)|||Helps dislocate your shoulder. If your trainer is one who gave you this advice, RUN!!!!!!!!!|||tricepts|||I wouldnt. That is way to much strain on the shoulders. I would use resistance bands or shadow box underwater. That puts tons of strain on your rotater cuff. Dont hurt yourself. For my training, I do pull ups, sit ups, pushups, run, jump rope, bag/ speed bag, swim, medicine ball. I dont lift weights because I want speed not bulk.|||instead of shadow boxing with them, were one might think it puts too much stress on the muscles, maybe try to run with them, and jogging with them at your chest.|||This is an easy question to answer. Shadow Boxing with 30-45lb weights does nothing except damage your elbow, shoulder and wrist joints. But if you insist on training this way, throw your punches really slow or somethings gonna pop.

How can I dry roses to put them in a shadow-box?

I%26#039;m going to Google it, but if you%26#039;ve done it before and like the way it turned out, could you please tell me how you did it? Thanks :) x|||Buy silica gel (used for drying flowers) from a craft store like Michaels or Joanns for best result. This way the petals will not wrinkle. Try to get the powder silica so they fill in the tiny creases in the rose. You will also need a container. Be careful to pour the silica gently and pay attention to the position of the petals so they do not get folded under. The disadvantage of this method is the cost of the gel ($15 for 5 pounds of silica) and the limited number of roses you can dry each time (1 rose per 5 pound of silica). The advantage is the quick dry time, drying is much faster if you add heat. Leave it in a warm place for 2-3 days or put it in the microwave set to very low for 30-60 minutes. The silica is resuable, just bake it in the over at 200 degree till the crystals turn to its original color.

You could also hang the roses upside down but as mentioned, the petals will prune up. The good thing about this method is it doesn%26#039;t cost you anything extra and there is no limit to how many you can dry. The bad thing is it can take weeks.|||otherwise if you want to have that obviously dried look you can just hang them upside down from the stem.

Picture frame or shadow box for pics and other accessories.?

I want to make a large collage? of pictures, and a few things that are like a quarter inch thick... I dont want one of those deep shadow boxes... so do they make thinner shadow boxes or do i use some kind of picture frame? Thanks|||I make shadow boxes and I make everything myself .Quarter inch is one of the size I use and I get good results .You can make them thinner.Take a picture frame and place it in the corner you are going to use and see how it looks .I take pictures and place them on the wail and then put the frame up step back and see how it may turn out .Good Luck .|||Go to Michaels or any craft store. I am sure they will have exactly what you are looking for.

I am trying to find out how to perserve live flowers from a funeral in a globe or shadow box, suggestions?

This is for a close friend who just lost her husband. When my mother in law passed someone had some roses from her funeral preserved and put in a glass container, its beautiful. I%26#039;m trying to find out how to do it or somewhere to take flowers to be fixed before they wilt.|||hang them upside down and pout hairspray on them two or three times it should preserve them fairly well|||Dry them out very well first...upside down-outta the sun %26amp; just before full bloom seems to keep them more sturdy.

I%26#039;ve used clear urathan(sp) spray that works pretty well. Not sure bout wax dipping. Ask a craft or floral shop maybe. Gd Luk.

p.s. you can also try pressing to use in a shadow bx.

Is shadow boxing a good resource?

will %26quot;air fighting%26quot; improve my skill? i don%26#039;t have enough money to freely spend on a heavy bag. and i don%26#039;t have a full size mirror.

ps. don%26#039;t bring up past questions|||better than nothing|||i think its a good way to warm up, work on your technique if you do it in front of a mirror, but if you were to shadow box as your version of sparing its not going to help|||Shadow boxing will improve your skill, but is limited in what it does for you it can improve balance technique. you can also work on your foot work. If you dont have a heavy bag you can use a mattress throw 2-3 punch combos.|||I don%26#039;t know. My shadow keep knocking me out before i can even throw a punch. I am a horrible fighter.

How can I relax my shoulders and neck more when boxing?

Whenever I%26#039;m sparring, hitting the pads, or even the heavy bag, I tense up way too much. I stop and relax, but ten seconds later, I%26#039;m all tight.

More shadow boxing in front of the mirror?

I dont know, but i really need help. Im tiring myself out way too fast.

Thanks|||.|||that%26#039;s a darn good question because I do the same thing when sparring.

on the bags i%26#039;m good and relaxed. Mine has to do with me thinking to much. On the bags i%26#039;m free flowing, double..triple jabs..rollout..movement...everything flows

I get to sparring under fire....lol...I tense up. instructor hates it. I get fluid for a min then back to tense. I kinda feel more aware and under control when I%26quot;m tense though. When i%26#039;m loose I lose focus at times and get hit with stuff that I shouldn%26#039;t

so basically I can%26#039;t help you. lol but I know what you mean...it wears you out.|||When you start doing it, take a deep breath, shrug your shoulders as high as you can and let them drop as far as they%26#039;ll go. Tell yourself to relax or get hit. Tell yourself %26quot;tense gets you hit%26quot;.|||Change stance the only way to be relaxed is to think in a relaxing way. Yes do more shadow boxing and use wrist weights. Jump rope

Do you throw full power punches while shadow boxing?

I do sometimes, or sometimes i put hand weights in me hands aswell, but its down to preference, the lighter weights dont commonly pratice this,|||No. If you do that your pretty much guranteed to hyperextend your elbow. Thats not the point of shadow boxing. Shadow boxing really is to perfect your form when throwing punches, snapping the punches with good form and bringing them back, keeping your non-throwing hand by your chin, staying on balance while throwing, keeping your chin tucked, %26amp; eyes up (you should be in front of a mirror) .|||yes|||Depends who%26#039;s shadow it is.|||personally i dont. I only do short sharp jabs.

Even if doing a hook i still do short sharp movements. You still get the same exercise from it. Plus if you go %26quot;full court%26quot; as it were and use all your power you could be in danger of causing damage.

HTH|||no why would u thats what the bag is for shadow boxing is to c the way u move and the try to correct it|||save it for the real thing|||I throw with power but I only extend my elbow about 95%. Don%26#039;t risk injury by hyperextending.

The real work in shadow boxing is in snapping the hands back.|||No you shouldn%26#039;t throw punches at full force. You do run the risk of hyperextension. The key to throwing to punch during shadow boxing is to #1 perfect your form #2 pull back your punch as fast as you had thrown it. Keeping correct a stance of even weight distribution (50/50 on each foot) relaxed shoulders + knees slightly bent, are all key points to throwing a good hard hitting punch.|||no|||Just use short crisp movements on all your punches. No need pulling a shoulder socket over extending your arm during practice.

Do you just sit things at the bottom of Shadow boxes?

Or is there a way to mount them in the center?|||Although I%26#039;ve made many of my own shadow boxes, I have also purchased a couple, and they came with Velcro to attach items inside. This is also what I use in my custom built ones, if it%26#039;s something I don%26#039;t want to damage by permanently mounting.

If you%26#039;re planning on mounting paper items you don%26#039;t want damaged look in the scrapbooking section of your craft center for archival mounts for a variety of ephemera applications.

Either way, you can attach items to both the bottom and back of your piece!

I hope this helps!|||I don%26#039;t know why they are called shadow boxes, but I have seen items mounted on the back-glued, maybe. You can also sit things on the bottom|||no u dont.. cause its shadow..?
