Shadow boxing with wieghts in your hand?

is it a good exercise?

ie been doin it latley and am wondering.

8 lbs in each hand.|||if you do it correctly yes.

but if you lock your elbow out while your punching you could hyper extend it. this is true if you have weights or not. when ever you do shadow boxing or techniques in the air weather it be kicking or punching you need to keep you joints slightly bent and not fully extend.

with weights i usually recommend not going full speed.|||actually if you are going to do that, which i would reccomend hitting a heavy bag over that by FAR.

then at least use wrap around wrist weights.

if you do that excessively it might screw up your fist (the way you make one) and teach you bad habits.

muscle memory is much of what we do- while it might provide some resistance, a heavy bag or a really fat scientologist strapped to your wall might provide more resistance and not give you that %26quot;grip%26quot; issue.|||8 lbs is a bit much if you haven%26#039;t been training with weights. Punches with weights must be done carefully and correctly or you can damage your elbows by hyper extending. I start my students with 3 lbs and work it up to 5 lbs or 8lbs depending on the stature of the individual. |||Umm....since you%26#039;ve already been doing it, shouldn%26#039;t you know whether it%26#039;s good excercise or not?

But for the sake of answers, I%26#039;ll just NO. It%26#039;s awful excercise. You should go to Rally%26#039;s regularly and get 2 Big Bufords and the largest cup of pop they offer and eat them in front of TV. That would be better.|||I fail to see the point, unless you%26#039;re punching upwards. Maybe for uppercuts it would work. Better to shadow box/hit the bag.|||It will build your arms up without sacrificing speed so I would say that it is a great exercise.
